Five players from Canada’s 2018 World Junior Hockey Team have been charged with sexually assaulting a woman in 2018. London, Ontario’s Police Chief made the announcement this morning, while also apologizing to the victim for the years it took to bring charges against the suspects.
A report from 6-ABC Action News said Police Chief, Thai Truong named 4 current and 1 former NHL players as defendants in his statement on Monday afternoon, before going on to apologize to the victim and her family for the amount of time it took to finally bring charges against: Carter Hart from the Philadelphia Flyers, Michael McLeod & Cal Foote both from the New Jersey Devils, Dillon Dube from the Calgary Flames, and former NHL player, Alex Formenton.
“I want to extend on behalf of the London Police Service my sincerest apology to the victim, to her family for the amount of time that it has taken to reach this point. This should not take this long. It shouldn’t take years and years for us to arrive at the outcome of today”, Truong said in front of a room full of reporters on Monday.
The 2018 closed case was reopened in 2022 by Detective Sgt., Katherine Dann of the Sexual Assault & Child Abuse Division. Attorneys for the defendants appeared in court on Monday via video hearing. None of the defendants appeared at the brief hearing today. Prosecutors sought, and was granted an order protecting the identity of the victim.
All five players have pleaded not guilty. The next court hearing in this case is scheduled for April 30, 2024.
